Ingredients

  • 12 mozzarella string cheese sticks, halved
  • 1/2 cup flour
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • 1 cup Italian-seasoned breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup grated parmesan
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • Cooking spray
  • Marinara sauce, for dipping

Instructions

  1. 1

Freeze mozzarella sticks for at least 1 hour — this is critical to prevent explosions.

  2. 2

Set up 3 bowls: flour, beaten eggs, and breadcrumbs mixed with parmesan and garlic powder.

  3. 3

Dredge each stick in flour, egg, breadcrumbs, then repeat egg and breadcrumbs for double coating.

  4. 4

Freeze coated sticks another 15 minutes.

  5. 5

Preheat air fryer to 380°F. Spray basket.

  6. 6

Arrange sticks with space between them. Spray tops. Air fry 5–7 minutes until golden — watch closely to prevent cheese blowout.

  7. 7

    Serve immediately with warm marinara.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do I need to freeze the cheese?+

Frozen cheese takes longer to melt, giving the coating time to crisp before the cheese leaks out.

Why did my cheese leak out?+

Insufficient freezing time or overcooking. Freeze at least 1 hour after breading and pull at first sign of golden brown.

Can I make these ahead?+

Yes — bread, freeze, and store in a bag up to 1 month. Cook straight from frozen, adding 1–2 minutes.
